Expert care for hip pain and injuries

Your hips contain your body’s largest ball and socket joint. This joint can withstand repetitive motion (walking or running) and lots of wear and tear. Over time, however, hip cartilage can wear down. Muscles and tendons can get overused. You can fracture your pelvis during a fall or other injury. Any of these situations can lead to hip pain. Common hip problems include:

  • Labral tears
  • Bursitis
  • Snapping hip, internal and external
  • Osteoarthritis of the hip
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Hip dysplasia
  • FAI (femoroacetabular impingement)
  • Flexor tendonitis

If your hip pain gets worse during activity and reduces your range of motion, you may have hip arthritis and even develop a limp from the chronic pain. Treatments for hip arthritis include injection therapy, medication, physical therapy, stretching and specific exercise movements.

When damage to the hip joint is severe, Dr. Hannon may recommend hip arthroscopy, hip reconstructive surgery, hip joint replacement or total hip replacement. People who have suffered the pain of hip arthritis for many years have discovered that hip replacement surgery can be life changing. The 10-year success rate for hip joint replacement and total hip replacement is over 90 percent.
